Paediatric Dentistry

Paediatric d-entistry is an age-defined dental specialty dedicated to providing comprehensive oral healthcare for infants, children, and adolescents, including those with special healthcare needs. It integrates specialized clinical treatments with child psychology to support oral development during a child's rapid growth phases.

Key Focus Areas

  • Preventive Care: Delivering targeted interventions such as fluoride varnish applications, dental sealants to protect deep tooth grooves, and professional cleanings to stop decay before it starts.

  • Behaviour Guidance: Utilizing psychological techniques like "Tell-Show-Do" and positive reinforcement to alleviate dental phobia, establish trust, and build a stress-free environment.

  • Growth and Development Monitoring: Tracking jaw growth and the transition from primary (baby) teeth to permanent teeth to identify issues like malocclusion or overcrowding early.

  • Restorative Care and Trauma Management: Treating childhood tooth decay with paediatric-specific fillings or crowns, and managing emergency dental trauma resulting from active play or sports.

  • Special Healthcare Needs Management: Adapting standard workflows, sedation options, and communication barriers to care for medically, physically, or developmentally compromised paediatric patients.

  • Habit and Dietary Counselling: Providing practical guidance to stop prolonged, damaging oral habits (e.g., thumb-sucking or pacifier use) and advising families on tooth-safe nutrition.

Core Goals

  • Establish a "Dental Home" Early: Securing a continuous, accessible dental relationship for the child by their first birthday to ensure regular monitoring from infancy.

  • Eradicate Early Childhood Caries (Cavities): Minimizing the prevalence of tooth decay, which remains one of the most common, preventable chronic childhood diseases.

  • Instill Lifelong Oral Hygiene Habits: Teaching children and parents proper brushing and flossing techniques to form sustainable routines that persist into adulthood.

  • Preserve Primary Teeth Structure: Protecting baby teeth so they can properly perform their functions—guiding the eruption of adult teeth, facilitating clear speech, and allowing healthy chewing.

  • Foster a Positive Attitude Toward Dentistry: Shaping early experiences so children grow up without dental anxiety, ensuring they seek regular care as adults.
